A three-row SUV has to have room for occupants, and the right capacities to haul their gear around. The Pilot improves for this model year with exciting equipment upgrades, especially in the lower grades. For example, all models now have a standard nine-speed transmission with paddle shifters. Honda offers many Pilot trims for 2021, including LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Touring (8 or 7 passengers), and Black Edition.

The Pilot also offers many other features. Here, we illustrate them by comparing the Pilot to the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas.

The 2021 Honda Pilot has more drivetrain features

Each Pilot is equipped with a 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine that develops 280 horsepower, plenty to load up your family and go. The nine-speed automatic transmission provides smooth shifting, and paddle shifters add personality to your driving experience.

The heavier Atlas powers its models with either a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder or a 3.6-litre six-cylinder. The 2.0-litre peaks at 235 horsepower, possibly causing challenges with acceleration as full loads increase the vehicle's weight. The six-cylinder generates 276 horsepower. Both engines pair with an eight-speed transmission, but neither drivetrain receives paddle shifters.

As you can see, both Atlas drivetrains are underpowered compared to the Pilot’s standard offering. And to top it off, the Atlas weighs 124 kg more than the Pilot.

Every Honda Pilot has a towing capacity of 2,268 kg, which is sufficient to handle a variety of campers, pleasure craft, or trailers with other loads. The Atlas can only match this towing capacity with the six-cylinder engine option.

The 2021 Honda Pilot provides a sizable and versatile interior

The Pilot extensively uses every litre of internal volume. Owners have up to 3,092 litres of cargo volume available with the second and third rows folded. This eclipses what the Atlas offers by over 350 litres, about the volume of a sedan trunk.

The Pilot's expansive interior translates into more passenger room. The front row features more shoulder room, and the second row has more legroom, headroom, and shoulder room. The third row includes more headroom and shoulder room.

Whether your trip is short or long, the Pilot offers a spacious home away from home that helps you relax and with room for everything you need.
